We have a wonderful team and compassionate team and our mission is to deliver quality patient care with a thorough understanding of each individual’s condition.
Our physicians continually strive to advance their field through participating in clinical research. The Retina & Vitreous Center contains its very own Macular Research Institute and allows patients the option to become part of our future and receive advanced care through clinical trials.
Dr. William S. Rodden is the visionary who identified the need for retinal care in southern Oregon and northern California. He established the Retina & Vitreous Center, the first practice of its kind in the area. He also designed and implemented the state-of-the-art surgery center at Asante Ashland Community Hospital, which is the surgery suite used by all retina specialists and many ophthalmologists in southern Oregon.
In addition, Dr. Rodden established a study center now known as the Macular Research Institute. It offers patients a chance to enroll in national clinical trials to test innovations in treatment for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis. He has been the principal investigator in a number of these trials.
He continues to delight in learning and passing his knowledge along, a custom to which those who have the pleasure of working with Dr. Rodden will readily attest. He is well known among his colleagues for his surgical skills and expertise and has built a thriving practice on referrals from other doctors in the southern Oregon area and across the nation.
Dr. Christine R. Gonzales joined the Retina & Vitreous Center in July of 2008. Prior to that time, she was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute’s Retina Clinic.
She has had over 50 articles, abstracts, and book chapters published and has received multiple honors, including an award for being a leading innovator in the field of medical and surgical retina.
She has been principal investigator in many clinical trials, including therapies for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis.
The Retina & Vitreous Center, which is the only retina clinic in Southern Oregon that participates in national clinical trials, offers the perfect setting to showcase Dr. Gonzales’ expertise.
In addition, she is an internationally recognized speaker and educator. Dr. Gonzales is fluent in Spanish.
Dr. Hyatt received his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University. He then served as a Medical Officer for 3 years in various Marine Corps units, including 2 tours to Iraq.
He was the Senior Medical Officer of a clinic stationed in Camp Schwab in Okinawa, where he served 3000 personnel, provided emergency medical care, coordinated the physician call schedule, trained 35 physician extenders and enlisted medics, and organized periodic mass casualty training. Dr. Hyatt was twice awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
He completed his residency at the University of Tennessee and his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Charles Retina Institute in Memphis. Dr. Hyatt practiced at Carolina Eyecare Physicians in Charleston, South Carolina before joining the Retina & Vitreous Center. He has been published in The Glaucoma Book: A Practical, Evidence-Based Approach to Patient Care and in the Special Forces Medical Handbook.
The entire staff of the Retina and Vitreous Center strives in every way to care for our patients with compassion, expertise and excellence. Our goal is for each patient to feel completely comfortable and satisfied with the care he or she receives from us.
We will work closely with your referring eye care specialist, your primary care physician, and other members of your health care team to provide the comprehensive care you need. Because many retinal problems are complex, we also remain available for follow-up education.
